Gifted Musician is recognized for excellence as Flutist and ComposerSixteen-year-old Lydia Roth, an 11th grade homeschool student, was a first prize winner in the Alexander and Buono International Flute Competition, for which she played her debut performance in Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall. She was also the winner of Youth Soloist Competitions with both the Kalamazoo Concert Band and the Grand Rapids Symphonic Band, winning scholarships and the chance to perform with each group.Beyond her flute studies, Lydia is also a dedicated composer. Lydia was a winner in the Michigan Music Educator’s Association (MMEA) Honors Composition Contest for the solo flute piece she composed, called The Four Temperaments. Lydia won 3rd place in the Grand Rapids Youth Symphony's Skip Gates Concerto Competition. She played flute in both the MSBOA All-State Honors Band and the MSBOA/MYAF Honors Band. She was a finalist in the Michigan Youth Arts Soloist Competition. She won 3rd place in the Lansing Symphony Youth Competition. She has been the principal flute player in the Grand Rapids Youth Symphony for the last three years. Besides her musical accomplishments, Lydia also earned a perfect score on the ACT test. During this first year of being homeschooled, she joined the West Michigan Homeschool Fine Arts Symphony Orchestra www.WMHFA.org and she participated in Chemistry class at GRACE Homeschool Association www.gracehsonline.org. Lydia lives in Hudsonville with her parents, Paul and Louise Roth. She has 6 older siblings, ranging in age from 22 to 36.
